Forest restoration initiatives in the state of São Paulo are significant in the context of similar efforts across Brazil. The state’s pioneering role gained momentum in the mid-1980s through initiatives led by the Institute of Botany and the São Paulo State Secretariat for the Environment, which promoted discussions among researchers, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and professionals in the sector. This study assessed the production of forest nurseries based on two main components: species richness and the abundance of each species. The closure of many nurseries and the financial difficulties faced by others may affect environmental commitments that depend on or involve ecological restoration initiatives. This assessment presents relevant findings for nursery managers and decision-makers, describes the current situation of the sector, and discusses its role in determining the quality of active forest restoration efforts
